"Blessing"

Weekly Journal No. 7
September 22-26, 2014

“I am Blessed to be a Blessing”

My accomplishment

I successfully executed 8 lesson plans for this week since I prepare 2 lesson plans for a day as well as different strategy and activities for the 2 sections that I handle. Last Friday, I presented my lesson plan to my supervising instructor for my demo teaching though it needs a lot of revisions and I need to rewrite it.

My significant experience

My significant experience for this week is that I was shocked when I taught grammar and most of my students doesn't know the simple rules and parts of speech in English. I also think of sample sentences on the spot in order to help my students understand the lesson. I even get mad for several times to the 2 sections I handle, since most of them were very noisy. My strategy is that I just stop for minute and wait for them to stop talking fortunately it was effective. I approached my critique teacher immediately and confirm about my observations and she explained it to me that most of them really have the hard time in understanding grammar as well as literature so I need to go down to their level and prepare simple sentences and give examples related to their real life experiences. I am really confused why they are in the fourth year level and they do not even know how to construct simple sentences. Moreover, I was quite disappointed yet I just took it as a challenge. I was able to teach on the spot for the first time in IV-Valor about Collocations yet I am proud of myself that I was able to deliver the lesson well.

My insights

In teaching we will undergo a lot of tough challenges and as a teacher we need to be unique in our strategies, activities, as well as having a positive attitude in dealing with serious problems encountered unexpectedly. As future teacher, my practicum phase would be my foundation when I am already in the field and whatever happens inside the classroom should be a closed matter. As a student teacher, it is my responsibility to adjust to my students for a more productive learning environment.

 Problems
I am hard up in managing the classroom since some of my students were very noisy during the discussion and prefer to chit-chat with their seatmates without them knowing that I am assessing their performance in my class.

Solutions

I asked advised from my critique teacher and I even observed her in IV- Peace on how she managed the classroom having a non-threatening environment. So, I imitated her strategies fortunately it is effective.

 My goals for next week

My goals for next week are to maintain my good attendance, to teach 5 lessons and to create a more productive learning environment. Moreover, to be successful in my demo teaching which will be rated by my supervising instructor.

“Why I changed my mind”

WEEK NO. 6
SEPTEMBER 15-19, 2014
“Why I changed my mind”

My Accomplishment
I consider preparing a chapter test as my accomplishment for this week, since it is my first time to prepare a chapter test for my students. At first, I find it difficult to prepare since I took up Assessment I years ago. However, when I’m preparing the questions I always think of my students from the sections I handle. First, if the questions were not that difficult or easy in their part and if the chapters test is good for 30 minutes since I need to review them about their previous lessons. So, I am worried for them but when I checked their papers most of them got high scores and it is very fulfilling to know that they learned something from me. Moreover, I also consider my 3 rated demonstrations at BCNHS  as an accomplishment for this week though I still need to finish 20 lessons before October 24.

My Significant Experience
My significant experience for this week was to be able to deliver my 3 rated demonstrations though at some point I find it very difficult to manage the classroom when it comes to their noise. It is also significant for me to be able to get to know my students based from their outputs, since I gave them assignment about their own philosophy in life.  The last day for me was full of fun since most of my students participate actively during my discussion.

My insights
This week gave me a lot of realizations despite of all the challenges I am experiencing right now in preparing my lesson, instructional materials, and varied activities as well as looking for a strategy for my diverse type of learners I always manage to smile. Since, giving up and surrendering in the battle field of education is not present in my vocabulary because in the end, I always end up learning.
I have learned a lot of things and changed my entire outlook and attitude towards life, particularly during my practice teaching, so no doubt it is indeed a blessing why I changed my mind and took up Education as my course instead of choosing other courses.

My Problems
The problem that I encountered this week is classroom management. I have a hard time in managing the classroom because of their noise. So, most of the comments of my critique teacher is class is noisy. I also encountered problem when my it comes to my students performances when it comes to grammar since I assumed that they already know the topic about compound sentences but they don’t  it seems that they cannot remember anything from their previous year level.

My Solutions
I solved my problem by means of asking my co-students teachers and most importantly my critique teacher Mrs. Jayrerose Guevara some strategies in managing the classroom. So, I can also integrate it inside my class which I find it effective. The strategies I used inside the classroom are being silent at first, calling the attention of students who doesn't  behave, and calling students to recite per row if one of their seatmate is noisy all of them will answer my question. Moreover, when it comes to their difficulty in grammar I will prepare simple sentences which are within their interests and level of understanding.

Goals for next week

I will immediately approach my CT and ask for a lesson to teach. Since, I know that I do not have enough time given to be able to finish 30 lesson plans with execution until the 24th of October so I need to teach every day. It is also my goal to maintain my hobby in coming to school early before 7:15 am so that I will not be hard up in having my make-up class in the end of the school year.

“”BEING A LEADER”

WEEK NO. 5

My accomplishment

I consider attending the Scouting orientation course and basic training course for Troop and Kawan leaders as my accomplishment for this week. This event was held at Quezon Elementary School from September 08-10, 2014 and usually starts before 7:30 am. It enables me to know the significant role of being a leader when I experienced being the Patrol leader of my team namely “Hawk”. This made me realized that leadership is a quality which cannot be acquired by any person from the other but it can be acquired by self-determination of a person.  I also learned a lot of things including the brief history of scouting, the ideals of scouting including the scout oath and law, the scout motto, slogan, sign, hand shake, salute, as well as the silent signals for troop formation and the patrol system. Moreover ,I also had my 2 rated demonstration at BCNHS.

My Significant Experience

My significant experience for this week was to be able to deliver my 2 rated demonstration after the seminar. It is also a significant experience for me to attend the Scouting orientation course and basic training course for Troop and Kawan leaders. Since, this seminar enables me to work with different students from the observers and practicumers as well. The last day for me was full of fun since most of s experienced how to do first aid during emergency, measuring places or things without using any instrument, how to use a compass in locating directions, as well as learning the different techniques in making an improvised chariot as well as lashing, and lastly how to conduct ourselves during flag ceremony as well as how to handle the flag correctly. I also consider as a significant experience when I was tasked to be the patrol leader of my team.

My Insights

This training made me realized the major causes of failure in leadership based from what I experienced during this seminar as a patrol leader.  First, in ability to organize details-a good leader is supposed to be a person with immerse power of organizing things in much better way than his followers. Second, fear of competition from his followers- a leader should never fear that one day his followers might take his position. Lastly, too much self-confidence- a leader should be humble and act as someone respected and trustworthy. Moreover, I also have realized 3 major attributes of leadership, first, infinite courage, self-control, and sympathy.

My problems

The problem that I encountered again this week is time management and how to manage stress. I am hard up in managing my time and preparing my lesson plan and instructional materials the whole night and I have no time to sleep since I need to teach 7:30 am after the seminar. I was so tired that I just went to lie down and sleep.

 My solutions

I solved my problem by means of asking my co-students teachers help me prepare my instructional materials and asked for their ideas regarding about my lesson.  As well as listing my priorities for a particular day so that I will not end up rushing things. Lastly, finding time on how I will be going to manage my stress by means of looking for things that will be my source of encouragement and will serve as my inspiration.

Goals for Next Week

I will immediately approach my CT and ask for a lesson to teach. Since, I know that I do not have enough time given to be able to finish 30 lesson plans with execution until the 24th of October so I need to teach every day.

Week no. 4

SEPTEMBER 02-05, 2014

“Make your Passion as your Profession”

My accomplishment
As a student, I lead a life of honesty and simplicity. By habit I need to wake up early from bed and do my daily routines and go to school presentable.  Usually I do my requirements at home and it is against my principle to put of today’s work for tomorrow but unfortunately last Friday (September 05, 2014) I am not prepared to have my rated demonstration at exactly 7:30 am. Fortunately, I delivered the lesson well since all of my students cooperated during the recitation. The things that I accomplished this week are I had my 4 rated demonstration for 4 consecutive days handling 2 sections. My critique teacher also gave me a lot of papers to check and a sample of Microsoft Excel where I will be going to encode their scores; with the given short period of time I was able to finish it before the deadline. My critique teacher also asked for my help in encoding the daily schedule of 4th year faculty who handles English subject. Lastly, it is also an accomplishment for me to get to know my students everyday basing on how they behave during my class with the help of my ever supportive critique teacher.

   My Significant Experience
My significant experience for this week was to be able to deliver my 4 rated demonstration every day. Moreover, I was able to observe the different techniques, strategies in teaching students when I entered section Valor and Peace which I don’t handle for now. It was also a significant experience for me to be able to meet the expectations of my students during my rated demonstration. I was also given the chance to prove myself to the students who don’t even bother to listen by means of applying some techniques that can encourage them to participate. Lastly, my significant experience for this week was to be able to find out my passion that I am really inclined with teaching as a profession.

My Insights
In my case, college life has been hard days and nights that I have been yearning for years. I am now facing higher education, a new dimension that open doors to good fortune and brighter future. This week made me realize that teaching will provide me more painstaking and nerve wracking endeavors. It is my responsibility to continue honing my craft and improving my self-worth as my students remains to be my source of encouragement and inspirations to labor hard with love and devotion in order for me to impart the knowledge they need.

Problems
The problem that I encountered again this week is time management. I am hard up in managing my time and preparing my lesson plan and instructional materials the whole night and I have no time to sleep since I need to teach 7:30 am. I was about to give up either. Another problem was when I got home this weekend. I was so tired that I just went to lie down and sleep.

Solution
I solved my problem by means of asking my co-students teachers help me prepare my instructional materials and asked for their ideas regarding about my lesson.  As well as listing my priorities for a particular day so that I will not end up rushing things.
Goals for Next Week
Next week after the 3 days seminar of scouting I will immediately approach my CT and ask for a lesson to teach. Since, I know that I do not have enough time given to be able to finish 30 lesson plans with execution until the 24th of October so I need to teach every day.
